This is the beginnings of a 3D model of Dealey Plaza.  Some obvious items are missing or minimal.  Please note that curbs have not been inserted yet so it is possible to "fall through" the model when you walk around.  I'll release more full versions as I finish them.

Please do not send complaints at this time.  Please remember this is just a preliminary version.  Please don't write and tell me what's missing because there's obviously a lot.  Positive comments are greatly welcomed and might inspire me to work faster.

Google has a free version of SketchUp that you can download by clicking here.

Note that there is also a SketchUp Viewer available which is smaller but lacks one important feature.  It's missing the "Position Camera" command.  I would highly suggest getting the full SketchUp, though.  They also have a pro version but I've never used it.

I'll release more details concerning source material later.  For now, I'll say the most important source was the HSCA Topographic Survey map prepared by Drommer & Associates.  It had many points of vertical data.

Please keep in mind that various maps differ widely in horizontal placement of many items.  It is impossible to make a model that agrees with all of them.  Hopefully this model will help people visualize what the area is like.  Also, I hope it might help people to get a rough idea if their own personal theories are possible or not.  But do keep in mind that the model is NOT perfect.

Thanks for your interest!  Drop me a note if you think this is a worthwhile project.

NOTES:

Version 2007-08-21:  Added curbs.  Added area on on south side of peristyle.  Revised Main Street a bit.  Added railroad tower.  Tower location based on aerial photography.  Size and elevation estimated from regular photos.  Minor changes to pergola.

Version 2007-07-17:  Added sign to top of Texas School Book Depository.  Added "Old Red" building

Version 2007-07-15:  Worked on triple-underpass.  Added and changed trees to something a bit more realistic.  Added more street lights.  Adjusted sign locations.  Pergola revised.  Added rough version of "Old Red" building.

Version 2007-07-10:  Added the pergola.  Probably needs height adjustment.  Rear wall and "roof" not complete.  Added items that are off the left side of the HSCA map.  So, the accuracy of them is likely less.  Added rough street lights, signs and trees.  All are very rough and will be refined in the future.  Revised peristyle.

Source #1:  HSCA Topographic Survey Map by Drommer & Associates.

Source #2:  Don Roberdeau's Dealey Map.  It has additional vertical elevation points.  Note this map has a different base point elevation than the HSCA map, but it's a simple matter of addition or subtraction to translate.  Also good for double-checking HSCA elevations.

Source #3:  Unknown Topographic Map.  Although unreadable, it does have some topo lines which can be used for comparision.

Other sources to be listed later.
