The Who
Charlotte, NC
August 12, 1997

My friend Jerry called at the last second with an extra ticket to see The Who
performing "Quadrophenia."
Jerry knew the production manager so he faxed a message to the pavilion before we
left in hopes of getting backstage passes. Then, off we went to see The
Who! Along the way, we ran out of gas and drifted down the Charlotte exit
ramp and into a gas station. As if we weren't late enough already!
The box office had no passes for us, so we went in with our
regular tickets and to our assigned seats. As usual, that wasn't quite
good enough for Jerry and he went in search of his connection. A little
while later, he returned with backstage passes! With those, we then
wandered among the much better seats.
Afterwards, we were allowed backstage. We were told
everyone had left except Pete Townshend. We waited and waited and eventually Pete came out.
Jerry talked to him briefly about a common friend while I just stood kinda in
awe. We both got our programs signed. As Pete was walking off, I
managed to pat him on the back and say rather lamely "Great show, Pete!"
